A majority of my photos were taken in Sunken Gardens. Sunken Gardens preserves the wildlife and plants that had sunk several feet below street level.
What is the subject for your photo essay and where did you take your photographs? The subject of my photo essay is nature in its natural state. A majority of my photos were taken in Sunken Gardens in Florida.
Why did you select this place? Why is it significant or important to you? I selected this place because all of the plants and wildlife was kept safe from harm and keeps the plants in their natural state.
What concept are you trying to portray about this topic? While taking these photos, I thought of one of the photo essay examples that was about "Man vs. Nature". I tried to portray what it is like if man were to preserve nature.
Visually, how did your images capture the narrative or “story” of your essay? The images show what it is like in the Sunken Gardens. The butterflies and the flowers provide example of what type of plants were kept safe in the Sunken Gardens.
Discuss: the order and arrangement of your photos and how you visually unified the series of photos? I wanted to have symmetry in my photo essay, so I arranged my photos based on how they looks similar. I took into consideration the size and positioning of the flowers and the color that the photos had.
Which photo is the strongest in the series? The eighth photo, in my opinion, is the strongest in the series. This is because it shows the plants and the butterfly in one picture. The main focus of Sunken Gardens is its butterfly garden, I believe that the picture perfectly represents the main attraction of Sunken Gardens.
Describe the composition (2) (viewpoint, angle, lighting, etc) and technical aspects / editing (2) of one of the photos. Most of my photos were taken from above the object so that the light was able to provide detail in the colors of the flowers and butterflies. The leaves from the trees were taken from below so I could have the clear blue sky as the background without anything else interfering with the complex leaf shapes.
